Sorry never tested those DACs you mentioned but usually, the key for me for quick assessment is the dedicated output voltage connecting to amps. Desktop DAC’s usually will output 2V/4V or higher if preamping. DAPs these days can match that but not all have dedicated line outs so in effect double amp. Some do though, this one does but you do need a 4.4mm to dual XLR to complete the setup.

The rest of the answer is probably too complex for a comment section but would involve looking at the PSU implementation, clocking, and quality of components. You do get a lot more potential for EMI from a DAP than a desktop DAC.

Also if you are connecting to a desktop amplifier the amplifier might add some different coloration to the core DAP sound. This is an R2R DAC with a tuned amp to suit, other amps could make it colder sounding, others might improve dynamics, and so forth. Whatever you are plugging into the DAP or amp will be a big factor.

How does a portable dap like Hiby RS6 compare purely sonically with something like an entry level desktop dac like Topping E30, Modi 3, etc? I mean if only their ‘dac’ capabilities are compared then how does an entry level desktop dac compare with a flagship portable dap?

Cannot agree anymore Marcus !! That’s why we love this hobby so much and why there are sooo many hardware choices.

Thanks for the great review!

No worries. Actually, I do have a digital oscillator and two analog signal generators with 1/100 probes and was taught how to measure at Oppo and Fiio’s factories over 7 years ago. I just find that the results from amps, (including DAPs) present incredibly boring pictures with no context, and in the end, people will look at the pic and STILL require the interpretation in written form.

Beyond that, people buy a DAP for the sound, software, and useability, I think that is more relevant. So much so it compels me to write 5 pages of feedback :)

Headfonics (and other worthy sites) gives a more organic review of the test piece vs hooking it up to a bunch of other equipment and saying its superb just because it “measures well”. Last I checked we were all human beings – not a bunch of robots hearing the exact same thing and wanting that perfect, ultra low distortion Harman curve piece.

Thanks for taking the time Marcus to NOT hook the RS6 up to stupid measurement equipment and give us a bunch of graphs when all I need to do is read your article and plug the damn thing into my ears.

Very clean, airy and detailed, yes. Thank you!

The Sp2K sound is quite a clean and airy tone, right? I suspect the R01 is going to be more your style

Thanks for the review!
If I like SP2K sound, should I go with R01 or RS6 for the R2R DAP?

I can’t agree with that unless you have not gone beyond the first few paragraphs. That 10k words over 5 pages with comparisons, measurements, and sound descriptions. Maybe this format is just not for you and you need something more diagrammatic?
