Well actually I used line out on the DAP rather than headphone out so in the end its pretty much the same setup as you would get with a DAC/AMP since the Bakoon uses an analog input only. If I had to pick one most likely I would argue that the Hugo from Chord would be the most resolving DAC.

In your review, you’ve focussed on DAPs as the source component; what would you consider to be a good portable or transportable USB DAC pairing for the HPA-01M?

Fwiw, Bakoon doesn’t actually hail from South Korea, but Japan. It was founded in Japan, it’s founder – the guy who created the SATRI circuit – is a Japanese geezer, and it still operates there. In fact, Bakoon Japan only makes products for the domestic market (though you can find them in some parts of Southeast Asia and Australia as well). BAkoon South Korea is effectively Bakoon International. They take the JApanese products, add some styling changes, put in different battery circuitry – and sell it to anyone from anywhere in the world. This HPA-01M is in an evolution of the Japan-only HDA-5520.

In reply to bmichels. I believe the objective was to miniaturize the HPA-01 into the HPA-01M with only a slight loss of power in the process so my bet is yes it will be better.

I understand that the HPA-01M is great with the LCD-X , but… will the bigger brother HPA-01 be even better ? Indeed, I have a LCD-X and I want the best for it !
